Buy a Domain from Claude Code: CLI and MCP Setup

Let Claude Code find a name you can register, compare first-year and renewal prices and buy the domain for the project you're building, with npx nymwell or over MCP.

This guide is for developers building a project in Claude Code who want the domain sorted out in the same session: a name that's still free, a clear idea of what it costs to keep, and the purchase done without leaving the terminal.

  • Yes, Claude Code can do it. It runs npx nymwell in your shell to check names and prices, with no account and nothing to configure.
  • Buying works two ways. Without a key, Claude Code hands you a buy link and you pay. With an agent key you create, it can pay with the card you saved, within limits you set.
  • It never handles the card. It can't see the card number, add a card or raise its own limit.
  • A plugin makes it automatic. Install nymwell@nymwell and Claude Code checks domains whenever one comes up. MCP works too.

How do I get Claude Code to search for a domain?

Ask in plain words, and name the tool the first time:

Use npx nymwell to find a short .com for this project, a ceramics studio called Kilnhouse. Show the ones I can register with the first-year and renewal price.

Claude Code runs the commands in its shell and reads the output. These are the four you'll see most:

npx nymwell lookup kilnhouse --tlds com,io,ai,dev # many names at once: taken or not, registrar, expiry
npx nymwell check kilnhouse-studio.com # the registrar's answer and exact price
npx nymwell info example.com # the public records of a registered domain
npx nymwell tlds com dev # endings with first-year, renewal and transfer prices

To skip naming the tool every time, add one line to your project's CLAUDE.md, the file Claude Code reads at the start of every session [2]:

For domain names, use `npx nymwell` (see `npx nymwell --help`).

Is there a Claude Code plugin?

Yes. The Nymwell plugin adds one skill that tells Claude Code when to reach for the CLI and how to read its answers, so it checks names whenever a domain comes up, in every project, without the CLAUDE.md line. Install it from your shell [6]:

claude plugin marketplace add nymwell/nymwell
claude plugin install nymwell@nymwell

The skill runs a pinned version of the CLI. It may run the lookup commands (lookup, check, info and tlds) without asking; quote and buy still go through Claude Code's permission prompt, and the skill buys only when you've set a key, asked it to buy and confirmed the quoted total. Claude Code estimates it adds about 80 tokens to each session. The source is on GitHub [7].

What do the results mean?

This is what the first two commands printed on 2026-10-31, with the column spacing shortened. Prices change; the commands always show the current ones.

$ npx nymwell lookup kilnhouse --tlds com,io,ai,dev
kilnhouse.com taken Squarespace Domains LLC · expires 2028-01-30
kilnhouse.io not in DNS US$70.42 list · confirm: nymwell check kilnhouse.io
kilnhouse.ai no record US$259.77 for 2 years list · confirm: nymwell check kilnhouse.ai
kilnhouse.dev not in DNS US$19.84 list · confirm: nymwell check kilnhouse.dev

$ npx nymwell check kilnhouse-studio.com
kilnhouse-studio.com available US$17.24 first term · renews US$26.32

Buy: nymwell quote kilnhouse-studio.com or give the person https://nymwell.com/buy?domain=kilnhouse-studio.com

lookup is a quick screen for up to 500 names. It reads DNS and public registry records (RDAP) [4], which tell you a name is registered but can't promise that an unregistered one is for sale: reserved and premium names look the same. Use it to rule out the taken names fast.

check asks the registrar Nymwell works with (Name.com) and returns its answer and the exact price, renewal included. Treat it as the final word before you decide.

Read the renewal price as closely as the first-year one. For many endings it's higher, and you pay it every year you keep the name; Why renewals cost more explains the gap.

Will Claude Code execute the buy itself?

Only if you give it a way to pay. There are two, and you choose.

Without a key, you pay. When check finds a name you can register, it prints a buy link such as https://nymwell.com/buy?domain=kilnhouse-studio.com. Claude Code passes it to you; you open it, sign in with Google, check the price and pay. Nothing is charged from the terminal.

With an agent key, Claude Code can pay within your limits. Create a key on the AI agents & API page and export it as NYMWELL_KEY in the terminal you start Claude Code from. Keep it in your environment or a secrets manager: don't paste it into the chat, and don't commit it.

npx nymwell quote kilnhouse-studio.com --years 1 # locks the exact price for a short time
npx nymwell buy <quote_id> # pays, or returns a payment link
npx nymwell order <order_id> # follows the registration until it's done

buy pays with the card saved in your workspace when the amount is within the agent spending limit, by default US$100 per order and US$500 per 30 days. With no saved card, or over the limit, it returns a payment link for you instead; --checkout always asks for the link. Only a person adds a card or changes the limits.

Before the first purchase, the workspace needs a registrant: the person or company the domain is registered to. Add it in the console.

Claude Code adds a check of its own. In Manual mode it asks before it runs a shell command, so you see the buy command before anything is paid; other modes, such as auto mode, change who reviews it [3].

Can Claude Code connect the domain to my site?

The quickest way is the console. Nymwell has DNS presets for Vercel, Netlify, GitHub Pages and Cloudflare Pages, and for Google Workspace email: apply one to the domain and the records are set for you.

With the key set, npx nymwell dns kilnhouse-studio.com lists the records that are live, so Claude Code can check the result while it finishes the deploy. Over the signed-in MCP connection described below, the AI can also change DNS itself, or the changes wait for your approval if Settings asks for it.

Can I use MCP in Claude Code instead?

Yes. Add the server once [1]:

claude mcp add --transport http nymwell https://nymwell.com/mcp

That address needs no sign-in: Claude Code gets tools to search names, check prices and hand you buy links. To let it buy, renew and change DNS over MCP, connect https://nymwell.com/mcp/account instead and sign in with Google; Let AI buy a domain for you has the steps.

Which one to pick: the CLI and the plugin need no sign-in, add little to Claude Code's context, and every command they run is visible in the session. MCP suits you if you already work through MCP servers.

Does this work on claude.ai?

The CLI doesn't: it needs a terminal. On claude.ai and Claude Desktop, add Nymwell as a connector instead. Let AI buy a domain for you walks through it, and the buying rules are the same.

Can Claude renew or transfer the domain?

Renewing works like buying: npx nymwell quote kilnhouse-studio.com --renew, then npx nymwell buy <quote_id>, with the same card and the same limits.

Moving a domain in from another registrar has its own checks and timing. How to transfer a domain covers them.

Questions

Do I need a Nymwell account first? Not to search. lookup, check, info and tlds work without one. To buy, open the buy link and sign in with Google; the first sign-in creates your account. For Claude Code to pay on its own, you also create an agent key.

Will Claude Code buy a domain without asking me? Without an agent key it can't buy at all; it can only hand you a link. With a key it pays only with your saved card and within the limit, and in Manual mode Claude Code asks before it runs the command. To pay for every order yourself, set the agent spending limit to 0 in Settings.

Is buying through Claude Code more expensive? No. Prices are the same as on the website, and the CLI and the MCP server cost nothing to use.

Where do availability and prices come from? check and quote come live from the registrar Nymwell works with (Name.com). lookup and info read DNS and public registry records (RDAP), which show whether a name is registered, not whether it can be registered.

Does it work in other coding agents? Yes. The CLI is plain Node.js (version 18 or later) with no dependencies [5], so any agent that can run a shell command can use it, Codex included.

Next step

Install the plugin, or skip it, then open your project in Claude Code and ask: "Use npx nymwell to find three .com names for this project that I can register, with first-year and renewal prices." Pick one, then open the buy link, or set your key and let Claude Code quote and buy it.
