Use a registrar API for deterministic application integration. Use MCP when an AI client needs to discover and call domain tools. The safest implementation routes both through the same identity, policy, approval and audit layer.
API and MCP solve different integration problems
A domain registrar API is a direct software contract. Your application sends structured HTTP requests, manages credentials and handles responses. MCP is an open standard that lets an AI application discover and call tools exposed by a server. An MCP server can sit on top of the same registrar action service as the REST API; it does not replace the registrar.
Choose the REST API for deterministic application logic
Use the API when you control the application and need predictable endpoints, explicit retries, queues, batch jobs or server-to-server automation. API keys should be scoped by organization, operation, domain and environment. Write requests need idempotency so a retry cannot create a duplicate charge or registration.
Choose MCP when an AI client needs discoverable tools
Use MCP when a person is working in an AI host and wants the agent to find the right domain tool, understand its input schema and return a structured result. MCP is especially useful for exploratory tasks such as brainstorming names, comparing options and preparing an action from natural language.
Tool access still needs authentication and policy. A model should not receive raw card data, transfer authorization codes or unrestricted production credentials.
One backend, one policy model
The safest architecture does not build a permissive MCP path beside a restricted API. Both interfaces should resolve to the same organization, subject, scopes, budget, approval rules and audit record.
| Need | REST API | MCP |
|---|---|---|
| Stable app integration | Best fit | Possible |
| Tool discovery in an AI host | Manual | Best fit |
| Batch automation | Best fit | Not the default |
| Human checkout handoff | Return a link | Return the same link |
